Felt Birthday Banner DIY

When planning our baby’s first holidays and birthday, it was so important to me that I created traditions with experiences and decor - and that some of the decor be homemade.

Don’t get me wrong…I am not talented when it comes to DIY projects. Buuut because it’s so important to me, I knew I needed to overcome the fear of it not turning out absolutely perfect (and the fear of what other moms thought about how it looked, if we’re being honest).

Enter the TikTok viral happy birthday quilted banner with batting. Simple to sew, will last forever!

Lol I was so convinced that was the perfect birthday craft to start with - until I spent 45 minutes trying to untangle the bobbin before giving up. I will eventually make my way back to the sewing machine, but there was no time before the party, so I found a felt banner I loved that looked a little more realistic!

It was slightly time consuming, but it truly was so simple! I want to spell out his name next to hang in his room, the only hiccup I haven’t solved is a discreet way to hang it. For his party I used tape to keep it secure from the wind, but there has to be a better way!

SUPPLIES:

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Pick out a font you like (I went with ‘League Spartan’) - you want it to be thick and boxy, thin lines will be harder to sew

  2. Print the letters and cut the felt to reflect the letter shapes - I doubled the fabric up when cutting, it halved the cut time and ensured both sides were the exact same size

  3. Start sewing a simple running stitch along the edges

  4. Once you have sewn three sides, fill with stuffing - I used the backend of a pair of tweezers to fill all empty spaces

  5. Continue sewing and stuffing the remaining space

  6. Once all of the letters are complete, thread the needle and run it through spaces at the top (eyeballing to make sure the height is the same for all letters).

    and that’s it!
